Bob West has been providing creative services to the advertising, television and film production industries, and to independent businesses since just after the earth’s crust cooled.
Working as a creative director, copywriter, and graphic designer, as well as producing and directing radio and television commercials, Bob simultaneously built a parallel career in voice over. A leading voice in comedy dialog radio commercials, Bob recorded everything from national television voice overs to highly technical educational narrations.
In 1987, Bob was cast as the voices of Jasper and Pasqually –two of the animatronic characters at Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza, speaking and singing as those crazy bots for ten years.
Then in 1988, Bob was cast as the voice of Barney the Dinosaur. The PBS series “Barney & Friends,” went on to top ratings in its early-childhood demographic, even besting the venerable “Sesame Street.”
Highlights of Barney’s busiest years include twelvesold-out live performances at Radio City Music Hall; live network television appearances around the world, including five on NBC’s “Today” show; a Daytime Emmy® nomination for Best Children’s Series, plus Barney’s live appearance as an Emmy presenter; and RIAA-certified awards for Multi-Gold and Quadruple Platinum record sales.
Millions of kids have learned about imagination, love and acceptance from a plush purple dinosaur that comes to life on their television screens, and Bob is honored to have been a part of that.
Bob’s work in graphic design for feature films and network television continues. Clients include features from “Jurassic Park III” to Jon Favreau’s “Chef.” Television clients have included Buffy spinoff “Angel,” NBC’s “CHUCK,” and ABC series like “the muppets,” the one-hour police drama “The Rookie,” and currently, “The Muppets Mayhem.”
In 2018, Bob and Barney celebrated the 30th anniversary of those first home videos, reaching more than 100,000 Facebook users during a new wave of nostalgia for the Big Purple Guy. Bob began appearing as a guest at pop culture conventions, and during the pandemic, started making appearances in live-streaming events and interviews. With those who were little Barney fans now having kids of their own and passing down the Barney tradition, Bob has his hands full!
