Sewing Workshops

Planet Comicon Kansas City and Missouri Sewing Machine Co. bring you Sewing Workshops for the 25th Anniversary! These workshops will be taught on site by Casey Renee Cosplay and Floral Moon Cosplay. They will take place in room 2104A in Bartle Hall at the Kansas City Convention Center during the event. Please see time for classes/workshops. All workshops come with a fee. You can get your tickets through the links below each class. Space is limited to 24 per class, so reserve your space NOW! All Sewing Machines are provided by Missouri Sewing Machine Company!

Friday, March 8 – 3:00pm – 4:00pm – Sewing 101 (Dice Bag) ($20)   – Contain your math rocks with this beginner friendly sewing class! We will be making a cotton drawstring bag perfect for storing at least one set of dice. In this class, learn your way around a sewing machine on our Janome household machines. We will cover machine basics, including how to thread the machine. Once our machines are ready to go, we will pin and sew dice bags using a straight stitch. By the end of class, students will have a brand-new dice bag they made themselves! This class is suitable for students 16+ or 13-15 if a parent is present to assist the student. Students should come with a desire to learn and the ability to follow along with this hour-long class. Materials will be provided, cut, and ready to sew! Instructed by Floral Moon Cosplay

Friday, March 8 – 5:00pm – 8:00pm – Introduction to Tambour Embroidery ($60) – Tambour embroidery is a couture sewing technique used to make detailed embroidered pieces of all sizes. It’s used to make costumes for tv, film and Broadway, as well as in couture fashion. This class will teach the chain stitch which is the foundation of Tambour and from there we will build upon that foundation with beads and sequins. Since this technique is so unique to itself there is no prior experience needed however dexterity and patience are highly recommended for this technique. The class includes hands-on practice with the technique as well as a project kit that can be taken home to further build the skill. I also include a digital version of this class that you get to take home and practice at your own pace. Saturday, March 9 –    11:00am – 1:00pm – How to Sew Applique, Trim, and Lace ($35)– In this class you will learn how to apply applique and reverse applique with a satin stitch so that you can add any design to a costume you would like. You will learn how to flatline lace onto satin to create a textured look. You will use your sewing machine to add trim and layer trim onto finished garments. (no more hand sewing necessary!) Finally you will learn the basics of insertion lace. With all of these components you can easily level up your costume creations and make the costumes of your dreams! Saturday, March 9 – 2:00pm – 4:00pm – How to Sew (Tote Bag) ($25) – In this beginner friendly sewing class we will be making a simple tote bag perfect for holding your Planet Comicon purchases! In this class, learn your way around a sewing machine on our Janome household machines. We will cover machine basics, including how to thread the machine. Sunday, March 10 –   11:30am – 1:30pm – How to Sew Pain in the Ass Fabrics ($25) – In this class you will learn about the different needles, thread, and sewing feet needed to sew with difficult fabrics like stretch vinyl, tulle, and more. This class also comes with cheat sheets you get to take home with you as well as a digital course you can refer to whenever you like.
