KANSAS CITY, MO — Planet Comicon Kansas City takes over Downtown Kansas City and Bartle Hall this weekend, April 28 – 30. One of the region’s biggest pop culture extravaganzas, there are hundreds of events and activities to explore during the convention’s three days of comics, celebrities, sci-fi, movies, television, cosplay and collectibles. From the opening ceremonies to celebrity spotlights and interactive panels, here are just a few of the events that highlight the heroic weekend at Planet Comicon Kansas City!
Friday, April 28
Opening Ceremony and Press Kickoff – 11:00 a.m., Room 2103
Celebrate the stars that make Planet Comicon Kansas City happen, from cosplayers to comics creators to celebrity guests. Last year there was a wedding and this year there’s a special Star Wars surprise for a young boy who’s dreamed of captaining his own galactic cruiser.
Master LEGO Builder Demo – 2:00 p.m., Planet Entertainment Zone (Exhibit Hall)
Here’s a chance to learn from the resident Master Builder at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Kansas City. Joe Nunnink is an accomplished builder who graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute and won the dream job of becoming a LEGO Master Builder. Joe will be working all weekend long in the LEGOLAND Discovery Center area in the Planet Entertainment Zone answering all your Lego questions!
The Writers Room: Comics! – 3:00 p.m., Room 2102
Hammer wielding gods, murder mystery, backstories of beloved TV characters, all comics begin with an inspired script. Join some of the most talented writers around, Jason Aaron (The Mighty Thor), Dennis Hopeless (Spider-Woman), Matt Kindt (X-O Manowar), Carole Barrowman (Arrow: The Dark Archer) and Frank Tieri (Harley Quinn) as they talk about everything that goes into writing comics.
Billie Piper – 4:00 p.m., Room 3501
English singer, dancer and actress, Billie Piper has been pivotal in pop culture’s most beloved names. From her work as Rose in Doctor Who or a monster created by Dr. Frankenstein looking to escape a violent past in Penny Dreadful, Billie is one of the entertainment industry’s most versatile actresses. She comes to Planet Comicon Kansas City for a special Q&A with fans.
Felicia Day: The Guild of Geek – 5:00 p.m., Room 3501
Actress, producer, best-selling author, Felicia Day has broken ceilings in the entertainment industry while inspiring young women to geek out proudly. A star of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and The Guild, help us welcome her to her very first Planet Comicon Kansas City with a special hour-long Q&A.
Planet Party on Barney – 6:30 p.m., Barney Allis Plaza
Featuring live music, dancing, a cosplay masquerade parade and live professional wrestling from the National Wrasslin’ League, the Planet Party on Barney will keep the action going as the first evening of Planet Comicon draws to a close. Grab a bite to eat from local food trucks, enjoy local brews and enjoy music from Kansas City’s “Run With It” and DJ Joe “The Mad Scientist”. The event is all ages and admission is free with Planet Comicon Kansas City credentials.
Saturday, April 29
John DiMaggio – 11:00 a.m., Room 2103
Voice actor and comedian, known for his gruff voice, and his work as Bender from the television show Futurama, Jake the Dog on Adventure Time, and Marcus Fenix in the hit Xbox video game Gears of War, John DiMaggio is at Planet Comicon Kansas City to entertain fans in this special Saturday kick-off Q&A.
Behind the Scenes with PopMinded by Hallmark – 1:00 p.m., Room 2101
PopMinded by Hallmark: Join the creative team as they go behind the scenes on creation of itty bittys and Keepsake Ornament products and more. They will discuss 2017 products releasing as well as reveal a few sneak peeks on what’s ahead. No telling what other goodies may be in-store!
From OA to The OA: Jason Isaacs – 1:00 p.m., Room 2103
The star of stage and screen from such fandom favorites as the Harry Potter series, multiple DC Comics Animated projects and the acclaimed Netflix original The OA, Jason Isaacs comes to Planet Comicon for a spirited and intimate Q&A with the fans. Don’t miss this special Comicon hour.
Go Comics: A Conversation with Bill Amend and Stephan Pastis – 2:30 p.m., Room 2105
“FoxTrot” creator Bill Amend and “Pearls Before Swine” creator Stephan Pastis will discuss their work and careers and ask each other thoughtful questions. As two giants in the cartooning industry, and as friends who have known each other for years, this panel promises interesting stories and lots of laughs.
Clint’s Comics: 50 Years – 5:30 p.m., Room 2104
Kansas City’s legendary shop Clint’s Comics is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Join owner Jim Cavanaugh in a discussion of what it is like to make comics retailing your lifetime profession, the rewards of meeting people within the industry and having lasting friendships evolve.
Cosplay Competition – 7:30 p.m., Room 3501
An annual favorite, this year’s Planet Comicon Kansas City Cosplay Competition is free for convention attendees and will feature an evening of great costumes and sparkling entertainment. John Anthony returns to host with the assistance of cosplay’s dymanic duo Abby Dark-Star and Zen Dragon. The Best in Show will walk away with a cool $1,000!
Sunday, April 30
Ron Perlman – 11:00 a.m., Room 2103
Whether he was raising hell in Sons of Anarchy or saving the world in Hellboy, Ron Perlman remains one of Hollywood’s most go-to tough guy actors. His looks may have landed him on the screen, but his charisma landed him in our fandom. In a special Q&A session, the actor will talk about his iconic roles, his voice work in Batman: The Animated Series and Adventure Time and much more!
Pop Culture Icons: Spotlight on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – 11:00 a.m., Room 2102
For over 30 years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been everywhere from film to video games. In a very special Planet Comicon Kansas City event, storied TMNT creator Kevin Eastman will be joined by artist Freddie Williams II to look back on the comic book adventures of these iconic characters and their role in pop culture history.
Wil Wheaton: Stand by your Wesley Crusher – 12:00 p.m., Room 2103
The actor of such fandom classics as Stand By Me and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wil Wheaton has become the ambassador for geeks everywhere. In a special Q&A, find out the origins of Wil’s fandom love and what’s next for the multi-talented entrepreneur.
