John Barrowman can be seen right now as Malcolm Merlyn, better known as The Dark Archer, in the hit drama Arrow. Based on the Green Arrow comic books, Arrow has been a huge success all over the world.
He’s carried that character over to sister show The Flash, and made an unrelated appearance on another The CW series, Reign, as well as ABC’s Scandal.
Barrowman landed his first professional role in 1989 while in the United Kingdom studying Shakespeare, starring as Billy Crocker opposite Elaine Paige in the Cole Porter musical Anything Goes. Since then, Barrowman’s career as a leading man in musical theater has seen him star in many West End shows including Matador, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard. He earned an Olivier Award nomination for the Sam Mendes production The Fix.
His most famous television role, of course, is that of Capt. Jack Harkness not only in Doctor Who, but later in the more adult-themed Torchwood spin-off. The show has provided BBC America with its best numbers ever, and the fourth and final season of Torchwood earned an American partner in the Starz channel.
He’s appeared in films like Zero Dark Thirty, All Stars, and sang “Springtime for Hitler” in the popular film The Producers.
Oh yes, that’s right, Barrowman is a singer. He followed up his 2010 self-titled album with “You Raise Me Up” in 2014.
